I have always been fascinated by nature’s microscopic patterns and structures, they are so exquisitely intricate yet beautifully simple, a world within a world.
My work explores the concept of hidden beauty within the natural world, capturing its essence by hinting at the processes occurring beneath the surface, as if seen through a microscopic lens.
The abstract nature of my botanical pieces is formed by combining bold shapes with delicate patterns to reveal the inner structures of flowers and plants using translucent textures and vivid colours. I strive to express the notion that beyond our ordinary visual experience of the botanical world there is a hidden, more complex realm of infinite energy, fragility and beauty, encouraging us to connect with these concealed landscapes with a renewed curiosity.
Inspired by the fluid way in which natural forms are depicted in traditional Japanese Art, I create botanical pieces using a technique, which I call ‘Liquid Impressions’. Dyes and paint are initially dispersed onto the surface of water and then manipulated using a variety of separate processes. Distinctive shapes and forms are then captured and layered onto paper or panel by way of repeated immersions.
My childhood bedroom in Milan doubled as my father’s art studio. I grew up surrounded by brushes, easels and canvasses, as well as the smell of his oil paint and solvents. After studying Architecture and Graphic Design in Milan, I graduated from Central St Martins with a Masters Degree in Visual Communication Design. Having moved to London, where I worked for many years as a graphic designer for an international design company, I never left.
Presently, I am based at Delta House Studios in South Wimbledon where I am able to exercise my full range of creative ideas.
